In the Wall Street Journal Gary Fields wrote an interesting article about the economic and community costs of prison.

For every 100 adults in a district in south Phoeniz, 6.1 are behind bars—-in prison or the county jail. This is more than 5x the national average. Furthermore, Arizon has the fastest growing prison population of the West.
